COURSE REFLECTION
Earlier in this course, I had little knowledge of the finance of higher education. Terms like IPEDS data, budget modeling, or the financial consequences of institutional strategic planning were not entirely familiar or intimidating. Over the last twelve weeks, my experience and confidence have increased significantly through course assignments, real-world data analysis, and case-based applications.
The individual/Partner Case Study taught me how to read financial trends based on real-life institutional statistics. In contrast, the Trends Paper expanded my understanding of funding issues and opportunities nationwide. To a greater extent, the Signature Assignment, which produced a comprehensive budget proposal of a Student Success and Retention Initiative, allowed me to combine all the mentioned skills in a practical and working plan based on research, cost-benefit, and strategic alignment.
Nowadays, I am confident enough to participate in such discussions and decision-making processes involving finance in higher education. In a personal sense, this knowledge has enabled me to better understand how institutions' priorities are financed and rationalized. Such understandings will be crucial in my subsequent professional life, especially when seeking opportunities in student affairs management, grant writing, or strategic planning, as knowledge of fiscal literacy is indispensable to success and advocacy.
This course demystified financial management and showed how budget planning can become an equity, innovation, and student-centered progress tool.
